The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression Files a Complaint Against a Former Member of the Popular Mobilization Forces Militia

PARIS (22 August, 2023) – The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) submitted a complaint to the War Crimes Unit in Norway against a former member of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) named Hussein Al-Hujaimi. Al-Hujaimi is an Iraqi man who has been living in Norway for the past six years and is suspected of committing murders and grave violations during his time in the ranks of PMF in Syria. SCM demanded the opening of a structural investigation related to the suspect’s confessions, which he broadcasted live on the social platform, TikTok. The Norwegian War Crimes Unit confirmed receiving the complaint request from SCM on August 21st, 2023.

Several videos were circulating online in which an Iraqi young man residing in Norway confesses to having committed several murders and grave violations in Syria, when he was affiliated with PMF. This militia fought alongside the Syrian government forces.

The suspect also revealed that he killed several Syrian children without specifying the exact tally, and that the youngest of these children was around a month old. According to the video, he killed the one-month-old baby who was in the arms of his crying mother. The videos also include death threats against Syrians residing in Norway.

This complaint comes within the framework of SCM’s commitment to end impunity and prosecute all perpetrators of crimes and violations that took place in Syria.
