Trainer – Using Open Sources in Investigative Journalism

Within the framework of the work of the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) in building a society based on respecting and protecting the right to free expression of opinion, and supporting media work and upgrade its, the media and freedom program in the SCM plans to conduct a training to enhance the journalist’s capabilities in the field of

“Using Open Sources in Investigative Journalism,”

SCM is looking for a “Trainer” based on the attached technical requirements and the following principles:

  • Preparing a training package to enhance the capabilities of 12 twelve journalists in using the open sources in media and investigative journalism (supervision of the SCM team).
  • Review the training package with the team to ensure that the training meets the needs of the target group and contributes to achieving the project objectives.
  • Conduct and management of training.
  • Preparing evaluation tools for the training, such as (pre- and post-assessment of knowledge)
  • Modifying and developing the training package based on the outcomes of the questionnaire and the training implemented.
  • Follow up with the trainees journalists during the implementation of their investigations so that they are ready for publication.
  • Submitting the final training report, which should include:
    • Analyzing the results of pre-and post-questionnaires.
    • Knowledge development.
    • Lessons learned and recommendations.
    • Documenting the training outcomes.
    • Attendance records.

Training details:

  • The training will target 12 twelve journalists from the different Syrian regions for 2 two groups according to the timetable that will be agreed upon.

Required documents:

  • Proof of work in similar training that includes:
    • Excellent academic qualifications, at least including a bachelor’s degree or higher in Media.
    • Demonstrable experience in implementing similar training for the media sector (at least five years), preferably in investigative reporting.
    • Proven technical experience, especially in the use of open sources.
    • Experience and understand the Syrian context and the issues faced by stakeholders in Syria.
    • Excellent training skills (preparing training packages – effective communication skills – feedback – evaluation tools – writing reports).
    • At least two references from previous work.
  • Financial offer including:
    • The Financial compensation.
    • The validity of the offer (duration- date).

Location of work:

  • Online.

Evaluation criteria:

  • The applicant’s experience with the training subject and conducting similar training(65%).
  • Financial offer (35%).
