SCM to Receive Albie Award from Clooney Foundation for Justice

PARIS, France (September 5, 2023) – The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) was named a recipient of the Clooney Foundation for Justice’s Albie Awards, an honor given to global justice defenders who have devoted their lives to their work despite the great risk that comes with it. This award will be received by SCM’s founder and general director Mazen Darwish on behalf of the organization.

Named after the South-African anti-apartheid hero Justice Albert “Albie” Sachs, the Albie Awards serve as a platform to recognize justice defenders from across the world for their great work and to shine a protective spotlight on them.

For this year’s ceremony, SCM will be honored with the Justice for Journalists Award. Other recipients of the Albie Awards include Congolese doctor and human rights advocate Denis Mukwege, who will be honored with a lifetime achievement award; Iranian journalists Niloofar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi, who will be honored with the Justice For Women award; Ukrainian organization Truth Hounds, which will be honored with the Justice For Survivors award; and Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, which will be honored with the Justice For Democracy Defenders award.

Since 2004, SCM has been committed to ensuring that human rights are protected and fully respected, that a process of truth, justice, and accountability is delivered, and that freedom is guaranteed. After the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011, SCM’s scope increased exponentially and focused on transitional justice and documenting human rights violations committed by all parties in the conflict. This resulted in an increase in threats, danger, imprisonment, and exile for SCM employees.

The past 19 years of accomplishments and relentless work would not have been possible without the support of partners, donors, and allies. But first and foremost, the courage of everyone who has ever worked at SCM along with Syrian victims and witnesses who believed in justice and were able to speak up.

With great pleasure and joy, SCM would like to congratulate Mazen, its team, and every individual who has worked with SCM in the past for the recognition of their devotion to Syrian justice. SCM also reaffirms its commitment to building a democratic world that upholds justice, and equality while respecting personal dignity, human rights, and fundamental freedoms.
