ARIJ is hiring a Managing Editor

Deadline is October 15, 2017

Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) is seeking a Managing Editor to lead our Amman-based team of home-grown Arab editors coaching reporters across the region on producing hard-hitting, fact-based investigations on issues of public concern in favor of accountability.

The ME should have demonstrated editorial and management experience, should have a broad view of Arab societies/politics, preferably have been employed at a media institution known for producing “accountability journalism” or at an NGO producing and disseminating investigative reports.  Editorial/journalism experience at the regional offices of international media like BBC, Reuters, AFP, CNN, Bloomberg etc… is a plus.

The ideal candidate should have at least 8 years of experience in investigative reporting and at least five years as an investigative editor. The salary is very competitive. ARIJ offers job-security (up to three-year contracts) a competitive package, and an amazing opportunity to join the region’s only network promoting “accountability journalism” since 2005. Non Jordan-based staff members get housing allowance, one annual round-trip ticket, medical insurance in Jordan and social security.

Responsibilities include overseeing daily operations of ARIJ’s cross-border collaborative work through the Jordan-based “Editorial Hub” as well as tracking progress on at least 55 in-depth stories a year in video form and cross-media storytelling in a difficult region. He/she will assist in digitizing the editorial content and in supervising editors running the ARIJ website, MENA and Data Research Desk Researchers and Fact-Checkers. He/she will also supervise the team running the social media to create higher impact and audience engagement. The ME will work with the dynamic group of  at least seven ARIJ-trained editors/reporters and may be required to travel across the region.

He/she will report to the Executive Director, who is legally responsible for signing off on investigations that meet ARIJ’s complex editorial and ethical standards after going through rigorous fact -checking. Strict editorial and legal scrutiny of ARIJ investigations has allowed us to investigate highly sensitive stories dealing with cross-border fraud and corruption like the Panama Papers, human and consumer rights, environmental abuses and miscarriage of justice.

Most of our investigations have promoted change for the better. They have also given a much-needed voice to the voiceless and told stories as they are and not as officials would like reporters to tell them.

The Managing Editor is expected to take up his/her job by Jan. 1, 2018.

To succeed in this position, you must:

  • Be proactive and audacious;
  • Have the ability to work across cultures and in austere and sometimes difficult environments;
  • Possess excellent teaching and leadership skills;
  • Ability to manage teams and to manage deadline pressure;
  • Have experience working in the MENA region.
  • Start date is as soon as possible.

ARIJ is an award-winning, internationally recognized non-profit organization and the first Arab investigative reporting organization. It is an equal opportunity employer.
