The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) sends its deepest condolences to the families and admirers of the Syrian media activist Raed al-Fares and fellow activist, Hamod Jnaid. Al-Fares and Jnaid were assassinated by armed men yesterday in Kafranbel in the province of Idlib in Syria.
Al-Fares will remain in the memory of many Syrians and non-Syrians alike as an iconic voice of freedom from Kafranbel, a town known for holding regular pro-democracy protests that criticise authorities and demand freedom and justice. He will be remembered for his witty and sarcastic slogans that captured the minds and hearts of people across the world.
A civil society mobilizer, Al-Fares was responsible for other creative initiatives, that include the Union of Revolutionary Bureaus, a grouping of civil society actors, and Radio Fresh, an independent radio station. He worked tirelessly to create safe spaces for the residents of Kafranbel and neighboring towns to engage in critical dialogue.
The SCM strongly condemns the assassinations which are a clear manifestation of the culture of impunity in Syria today and yet another attempt to silence dissent.
