Journalist Abdul Majeed Tamr Released after Six Months in Detention

The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression has learned that the Syrian journalist Abdul Majeed Tamr has been released on Wednesday 18/1/2012. Tamr was detained by the Political Security branch in the city of Qamishli on 31/5/2011 in what it is believed to be an ambush after being contacted by an unknown person on the phone.

He was detained over covering and participating in the late demonstrations organized in Qamishli.

The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression Congratulates the journalist Abdul Majeed Tamr for his freedom and calls upon the authorities to release all detained journalists, bloggers and citizens who are detained for expressing their constitutional and legal right to freedom of expression and opinion.

SCM emphasizes that it is the responsibility of the state to protect freedom of press and expression as stated in the international treaties signed by the Syrian government.
