{"id":189826,"date":"2019-11-19T03:00:03","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T01:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scm.bz?p=189826"},"modified":"2019-11-21T03:06:24","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T01:06:24","slug":"human-rights-defenders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scm.bz\/en\/human-rights-defenders\/","title":{"rendered":"At FIDH 40th Congress, participants call for the release of human rights defenders in the Middle East and North Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>At FIDH 40<sup>th<\/sup> Congress, participants call for the release of human rights defenders in the Middle East and North Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>19-November-2019\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We, human rights defenders from the Middle East and North Africa region, supported by our colleagues from all the regions across the globe who attended the 40th Congress of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) in Taipei, Taiwan on 21-25 October 2019, declare our full solidarity with\u00a0missing, kidnapped and detained rights defenders, online activists and journalists in our countries, and call for their immediate and unconditional release. We remember their courage, commitment, and determination to have a prosperous future for all our citizens, one where the rights to free expression, assembly and association are respected.<\/p>\n<p>We reiterate our calls and demands to disclose the fate and whereabouts of detained and disappeared\u00a0human rights defenders\u00a0<strong>Razan Zaitouneh, Samira Al-Khail, Wa&#8217;el Hamadeh, Nazem Hammadi, Khalil Ma&#8217;touq,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Mohamed Thatha, who remain unaccounted for until today.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are very concerned for the health and well-being of colleagues and friends from FIDH member organisations, including <strong>Nabeel Rajab<\/strong> and <strong>Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja<\/strong>, founders of the Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) and the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR), who are imprisoned on lengthy sentences in Bahrain with inadequate medical care, along with <strong>Naji Fateel<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Abduljalil Al-Singace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We call for freedom for all human rights defenders serving prison sentences in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), including GCHR Advisory Board Member\u00a0<strong>Ahmed Mansoor<\/strong>, as well as human rights lawyers Dr.<strong>\u00a0Mohammed Al-Roken<\/strong> and Dr.<strong>\u00a0Mohammed Al-Mansori<\/strong>, and academic Dr.\u00a0<strong>Nasser Bin Ghaith<\/strong>. All of them have been poorly treated in prison and Mansoor is held in isolation, where he is very ill.<\/p>\n<p>In Egypt, we call for the release of all those arbitrarily arrested since protests began on 20 September 2019 calling for the President to resign. They include human rights lawyer <strong>Amr Imam<\/strong> of\u00a0the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), journalist\u00a0<strong>Esraa Abdel Fattah<\/strong>, human rights lawyer <strong>Mahienour El-Masry<\/strong>, and prominent blogger <strong>Alaa Abdel Fattah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In Iran, many human rights defenders are serving long sentences in prison for defending the rights of women and children, the environment, and minorities, as well as for fighting against the death penalty, including\u00a0<strong>Atena Daemi<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Nargess Mohammadi<\/strong>,\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Nasrin Sotoudeh.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the many women human rights defenders arrested in Saudi Arabia who remain in prison are\u00a0<strong>Loujain Al-Hathloul<\/strong>, <strong>Samar Badawi,\u00a0Nassima Al-Sadah,\u00a0Nouf Abdulaziz, Mayya Al-Zahrani<\/strong>,<strong> Israa Al-Ghomgam<\/strong>, and <strong>Naima Al-Matrod<\/strong>. Many other human rights defenders remain in prison in Saudi Arabia serving lengthy sentences including\u00a0<strong>Raif Badawi<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Walid Abu Al-Khair<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Issa Al-Nukheifi, Essam Koshak<\/strong>,<strong> Mohammed Al-Oteibi<\/strong>, Dr. <strong>Abdullah Al-Hamid<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Dr. <strong>Mohammad Al-Qahtani<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In Kuwait, many Bedoon rights activists remain in prison for protests carried out this summer, including<strong>\u00a0Abdulhakim Al-Fadhli,\u00a0Ahmed Al-Onan,\u00a0Awad Al-Onan,\u00a0Abdullah Al-Fadhli,\u00a0Yousif Al-Osmi,\u00a0Nawaf Al-Bader, Yousif Al-Bashig,\u00a0Hamoud Al-Rabah,\u00a0Khalifa Al-Anzi,\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Reda Al-Fadhli.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Across the region, journalists who are critical of their governments have been arrested on false charges and sentenced to long prison terms, such as press freedom activist\u00a0<strong>Taoufik Bouachrine<\/strong>, Managing Editor of <em>Akhbar El-Youm<\/em>, in Morocco.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We call on the relevant authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all human rights defenders, journalists and online activists jailed across the region in violation of their rights to free expression, assembly and association<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At FIDH 40th Congress, participants call for the release of human rights defenders in the Middle East and North Africa 19-November-2019\u00a0 We, human rights defenders from the Middle East and North Africa region, supported by our colleagues from all the regions across the globe who attended the 40th Congress of the International Federation for Human [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":24,"featured_media":189827,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[318,299],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-189826","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-rotator-en","category-scm-statements","post-wrapper"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v20.6 (Yoast SEO v26.5) -
