In that time, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/jigsaw\/montage-the-next-generation-of-war-reporting-a04f4176aff#.ju8asm7ne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more hours of footage<\/a> have been produced of the conflict than there have been hours of the conflict itself.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With such a high volume of video footage available, how can journalists sift through this content to find out what\u2019s really taking place on the ground?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A newly created tool called <a href=\"https:\/\/montage.storyful.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montage<\/a> allows journalists, human rights groups and more to do just that, collaboratively analyzing and verifying conflict footage in order to accurately relay this information to the public. Users can search for YouTube content by location and time, tag the videos according to specific people, places or things, and collaboratively analyze that information to find out the truth behind the footage.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartercenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Carter Center<\/a> has used the tool to produce <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cartercenter.org\/syria-conflict-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this map<\/a> of the Syrian conflict, an interactive visualization of how the conflict has evolved over the years.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Using data from Montage to analyze video footage from the conflict, the map is able to relay information in real time, providing journalists and humanitarian workers with an essential resource. Montage data has also allowed the Center to produce maps that show <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/03\/world\/middleeast\/syria-russia-airstrikes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russian airstrikes&#8217; efficacy<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/feb\/05\/syrian-government-forces-north-choke-opposition-aleppo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assad government&#8217;s resurgence<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/03\/world\/middleeast\/syria-russia-airstrikes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISIS troop movements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Montage helps our team analyze days of video content by enabling collaboration,\u201d the Center said in a statement. \u201cIt allows us to focus our attention on analysis as opposed to data collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vEFTjcVsDjQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jigsaw.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jigsaw<\/a>, Montage\u2019s creator, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/jigsaw\/montage-the-next-generation-of-war-reporting-a04f4176aff#.ju8asm7ne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explained<\/a> that the tool is inspired by Bellingcat founder <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eliothiggins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eliot Higgins<\/a>, who became known for scouring through YouTube footage of the Syrian civil war to investigate specific attacks, chemical weapon allegations and movements of troops.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To get started with Montage, users connect the tool to a Google account. From there, you can create a project, search for videos to add to the project and share your work with collaborators.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Montage, now part of <a href=\"http:\/\/storyful.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Storyful<\/a>, is currently in beta.
