New Cooperation on Efforts Towards Justice and Accountability in Syria

The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Syrian League for Human Rights and Accountability (SLHRA), and another with the Syrian Legal Network in Netherland (SLN-NL), with the aim of combining efforts on litigation and advocacy for justice and accountability in Syria in the upcoming two years.

The MoUs intend to formalize mutual cooperation between the two Syrian human rights organisations, particularly concerning the documentation of violations of the Syrian Criminal Code, international humanitarian law, international conventions relating to human rights, as well as crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Syria since February 2011 and any future violations.

The organisations also seek to combine their efforts in building cases and identifying suspected perpetrators. The aim is to exchange experiences, consultations, studies and analyses of information and data, as well as physical and digital evidence that helps build cases.

This signifies yet another important step towards cooperative work that facilitates the establishment of individual criminal responsibility in Syria and contributes to the promotion of the principles of the rule of law and its enforcement, the protection of human rights, and the promotion of transitional justice.
