The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) is an independent, non-governmental and non-profit institution that aims for a society that guarantees freedom of expression, belief, human rights and access to justice. Since its establishment in 2004, SCM has worked to defend individuals persecuted because of their beliefs, promote human rights, and support and develop professional, independent and critical media.

The SCM currently focuses on human rights violations documentation, litigation for victims, and support for civil society and Syrian media/journalists. Our team members are based in Syria and neighboring countries, as well as Europe and the Americas, and our headquarters are in Paris, France.

The SCM is recruiting for a Coordinator who will help oversee the Litigation Program’s administration according to the identified needs and objectives by SCM. Roles and responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of short and long-term plans for the program and its activities, including the preparation of projects and requests for funding, monitoring development, ensuring compliance and evaluating performance
  • Coordinate staff performance and the implementation of activities in the program in accordance with the specific plans and instructions of the program’s manager
  • Draft internal and external reports in Arabic and English according to the standards adopted by the SCM and by donors
  • Prepare summaries of the various activities including meetings and ensure their preservation, consistency with the general plans and the content of the work of the program, and coordination with other programs and sections as needed in accordance with direct directions of the manager
  • Document and preserve relevant information, documents and data in accordance with the specific needs of the program and in line with the organisation’s digital and institutional security policies
  • English-to-Arabic translation and vice versa (verbal and written) while maintaining proper content and style
  • Facilitate, organize and/or hold meetings /activities periodically with specific individuals and entities to support and develop positive relationships
  • Coordinate with partners, media and other stakeholders to explain and promote the program and its activities under the manager’s guidance and in coordination with the activities of the Department of Advocacy and Communications
  • Adherence to professional standards set out in the relevant regulations, protocols and laws
  • Maintain a safe working environment that complies with safety procedures and rules
  • Maintain and protect the privacy and privacy of beneficiaries in all cases and with all documents and data
  • Join in leading meetings and internal activities of the program and the submission of periodic reports
  • Write and submit monthly reports on the progress of work and the current situation
  • Any other tasks assigned by the manager

Skills and Experience

  • University degree in law or equivalent.
  • Fluency in Arabic and English; French is a plus
  • Two years of experience in administrative work related to human rights or international law and non-governmental organizations
  • Ability to use relevant computer and internet programs and tools
  • Availability and ability to travel
  • Significant and detailed knowledge of the Syrian context especially regarding the involved actors in the conflict
  • A team worker but also able to work individually and under pressure and in difficult situations
