The Legal Dimensions of the Syrian Government Measures in Fighting the Corona Pandamic

The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) would like to share with you a report prepared by the Violations Documentation Center (VDC) titled  “The Legal Dimensions of the Syrian Government Measures in Fighting the Corona Pandemic.” The report finds that the Syrian government has taken various inappropriate measures to fight the Corona (Covid-19) pandemic, including enforcing quarantine over people returning from abroad in non-suitable places, failing to abide by the necessary quarantine timeframe, creating inefficient and often discriminatory measures relating to curfews, and making exceptions for people with powerful connections while prosecuting others for daring to protest against the terrible quarantine conditions.

Findings also show that the Syrian government did not adhere to providing adequate protective equipment for healthcare workers dealing with the pandemic, leading to many deaths among doctors and patients. Moreover, it is neither announcing true statistics of infection rates nor following the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) to limit the spread of the virus. By the end of July 2020, the Syrian government has registered the death of at least 43 people out of 780 positive cases of Coronavirus.
